UHRAD-STEMPEL (POSTMAN'S NUMERAL)

Learn More - UHRAD-STEMPEL (POSTMAN'S NUMERAL)

These small and decorative "gear-wheel" cancels were applied by the delivery postman, either on mail where the stamps had been left uncancelled in error, or on rural or local mail where mail was collected and delivered by the postman on his rounds, without going through a sorting office. Numbers run from 1 to 50 (plus 2a, 12a). Several types are known for most numbers. It is not normally possible to ascribe a locality to numbers as there was duplication of numbers between different districts. The numbers are also known as transit marks on cover, alongside a stamp but not as a canceller, or on unfranked official mail.
